MOVIE POSTER

Regrettably all of the silent movie versions of St. Elmo have disappeared from sight. The fragment of a movie poster, seen below, is all that remains of the 1923 version from the Fox Company, with Hollywood legend John Gilbert in the role of St. Elmo, "the monster of hate conquered by . . ."

The poster tells us that the story was updated from the 1860s to the 1920s and promoted as a tale in which St. Elmo must choose between the vampish character played by Barbara LaMarr and the upright character Edna Earl. The poster suggests that Edna, on her knees in a plain dress on the left edge of the poster, may not have been the spirited protagonist she was in the novel.
